New Year. New You.

As I stepped out of my morning shower, a fascinating question suddenly popped into my head that really got me thinking. The question was this: What are the statistical odds that I would ever have been born? Considering the thousands of years man has been on this planet, the countless genetic possibilities occurring century after century, generation after generation, the statistical odds of my being here are in the hundreds of billions, if not trillions. Talk about winning the lottery of life against all odds!

The next question that popped up was: How many people have had to make great sacrifices so I could have the chance at life I now have? What pondering these two questions did was to move me to a compelling sense of urgency and responsibility to honor the extraordinary gift of life I now have, to make sure my life will stand for something truly significant.

The New Year represents a great opportunity to begin making adjustments to the trajectory of our lives to ensure we live the best possible life for each of us. As we teach at HPI, by revisiting our grand purpose (Ultimate Mission) for life, by facing the truth about where improvements need to be made, by writing a new story that aligns our energy investments with the desired changes, by building new rituals supporting the change, and by holding ourselves accountable, significant course corrections of our lives can occur. One of my all time favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill – “History will be kind to me because I intend to write it.” The beginning of 2013 is a great time to create your new story, one that clearly justifies your winning the lottery of life.
